Keep Jumping from Your Dog to a Minimum
Tagged Under : How to stop your dog from jumping, stop dog jumping
Many people have dogs that are constantly jumping, as it is a typical issue. When your dog is a puppy, people think that it is adorable when they jump, making bad behavior a common occurrence without realizing it. Regrettably, as the dog grows, this becomes more hazardous for the person on whom they are jumping and it is harder to correct.
When you first get your new puppy, training should begin right away. Puppies are undoubtedly easier to train and that is why it is ideal to start early, however a patient and consistent owner can train any dog of any age. Again, the trick is to begin the training process as soon as your dog comes home and this will not only reinforce your position as master but also aid in keeping negative behavior from developing into a habit.
Step #1 – Institute an Off Command
The first item is to institute and off command. If your dog jumps on anyone, including you, use this command immediately. It can be any word of your choosing, as long as it is short, to the point and easy for you to remember. You should speak the word consistently and firmly every time your dog jumps on a person. Your dog will learn at an even quicker rate if you have other people use the same commands when your dog jumps up onto them, showing your dog that no one approves of that type of behavior.
Step #2 – Teaching Sit
If you want to find other ways to keep your dog from jumping, you should show your dog how to sit. When the dog is coming towards you, before he even has the chance to jump on you, command him to sit. As the dog comes to learn this command, you can have it sit before it gets the opportunity to jump.
Step #3 – Look Him in the Eye
When you are greeting your dog, you should bend or stoop down to be on the same level as your dog. Your dog will be less likely to jump up onto you because you will be at eye level with them already, making them very happy. In other words, bending over to meet your dog does away with the need for jumping in the first place. When you finish acknowledging your dog, if it jumps up for more attention, demonstratively use the off command and then the sit command to make it known that jumping is not allowed.
Step #4 – Giving Your Dog a Time Out
You can use a time out with your dog if they don’t pay attention to your commands of off or sit, to make training a bit easier. When the dog jumps up and does not adhere to your commands, put them in their crate or kennel. Your dog desires your attention wholeheartedly, and by placing him in the kennel, you are letting him know that if he does not follow the rules he will be placed away from you and your attention.
Consistency is important, and if you are able to consistently follow these steps you will soon find that your dog has stopped jumping. It is natural that some dogs will learn this faster than others, so you may also need to be patient. The important thing is to continue with the Off Command you have decided on, and the other steps listed here and follow them all consistently until your dog finally learns the lesson. But if your dog is inordinately hard headed and just not doing well with the training, perhaps it is time to seek professional assistance to determine the problem with your methods.
