People never used to get elaborate when it came to beds for dogs. Either the dog slept on the bed with them, or it had its own mat or a rug somewhere on the floor. Nothing too elaborate. But for many dog owners, those days are long gone. Now, most dogs aren’t just assigned a rug or mat that was already in the house, but sleep on a bed that was bought specifically as a pet bed. And some of the pet beds out there go beyond a simple design and step into the realm of the unusual.
Many people looking for very special beds for dogs often decide on something like a canopy bed. Some look much like the traditional canopy frames that humans use, while others take on a more exotic tone. For example, Glamour Dog (www.glamourdog.com) sells what are essentially round, canopied tents, with roofs that rise to a pointed central spire. These luxury dog beds bring to mind something like a Sultan’s tent, and are richly decorated with jewels or feathers or fur.
But taking a more formal route in unusual dog beds, one very interesting type is the Murphy bed. This is the sort of bed that folds up against a wall in the daytime, displaying only a smooth wooden cabinet, but then lowers the hidden mattress and bedding to the floor at night. This type of dog bed furniture can be both utilitarian and decorative. It saves space in the daytime, but can also be designed to match the other furniture in the room. It becomes an actual part of the decor.
The thing about these unusual beds for dogs is that there is often an element of fun in the choice. Why else would you find beds in the shape of cars, tents, gazebos, spaceships or elegant divans? Gone are the days when a simple dog crate bed was good enough, even if a bit boring. Now people are looking for some style, a bit of pizzazz, to go along with the usefulness of the dog bed. Some of these unusual types of beds are just the thing to add that spice.
